Define the investor profile before building a list
Start with stage, sector, geography, check size, business model, regulatory context, and the amount being raised. Add strategic needs such as enterprise sales experience, technical recruiting, marketplace knowledge, or access to a particular industry.
Research actual investments, not only a firm’s stated themes. Note competing portfolio companies, the relevant partner, recent activity, typical ownership, and whether the investor can lead or follow the round.
Build relationships around evidence
Warm introductions from founders, operators, advisors, attorneys, and existing investors can add context, but they do not replace a strong company. Share concise evidence of customer need, traction, insight, and why the team can execute.
Founder communities, industry events, accelerator networks, demo days, and direct outreach can all work when the targeting is thoughtful. Begin relevant relationships before the company is urgently short of cash.
- Create a focused list rather than a mass-mail database.
- Identify the individual partner most connected to the thesis.
- Track introductions, meetings, questions, and next steps consistently.
Write outreach that earns a conversation
A useful message states what the company does, who needs it, the strongest evidence so far, why this investor is relevant, and the specific round or conversation underway. Keep it short enough to forward without rewriting.
Avoid unsupported market superlatives and generic personalization. A direct explanation of one unusual insight or strong customer signal gives an investor something concrete to investigate.
Evaluate investors while they evaluate you
Ask about decision-making, reserves, board style, portfolio support, expected reporting, conflicts, and behavior when companies miss plans. Request references from founders at different outcomes and stages of the relationship.
Fundraising is a matching process under time pressure. Run it with organized materials, consistent meetings, and clear decision criteria so momentum does not replace judgment.
Put the idea into motion
Explore relevant people, communities, and opportunities across the founder network.
